Assimilation
The process in which an individual is turned into a drone. It is administered in two steps: In the first step,
a drone inserts nanoprobes into the blood stream, via tubules. The nanoprobes latch on to the blood cells,
taking over their functions. In the second step cybernetic implants both grow from within and being planted
surgically by drones. Assimilation is taking place in an assimilation chamber.
Assimilation chamber
This is a room specially designed for assimilation. There are a bunk where the victims are placed and
instruments and implants ready for use.
Biochips
Chips that is surgically implanted in the body of a drone. The chips will enhance the drone's physical
capabilities and create the organic parts that the drone needs for survival. In this way, the drone body
will have the right proportion of organic parts in relation to its cybernetic.
Bio ships
Ships used by species 8472 with enormous firepower, one ship can easily destroy a Cube and if a few ships
link together they can destroy a planet within seconds. The ships have the same immune system as the species
and nanoprobes are thus useless as a weapon unless you reprogram them to simulate the species own cells.
These ships were used with much success in the war against the Borg.
Central Plexus
A device onboard every Borg vessel. It links the vessel to all other vessels in the collective. It makes it
possible for all drones serving on Borg vessels to hear the thoughts of drones onboard other vessels. It is
thus a very important component in the technology of the Hive mind.
Cortical Node
An implant placed in the forehead that regulates the vital functions of a drone. It regulates both implants and organs.
The Cortical Node also makes it possible for the drone to regenerate. If this implant malfunctions
the drone will shortly die. A replacement from a deceiced drone is not
compatible. Seven of Nine, a severed drone aboard Voyager, had one transplanted from another severed drone
on Voyager called Icheb. By genetic alteration he could live without his node.
Cube
A standard Borg vessel, which is used for assimilation of other species. It has enormous firepower and strong
defences with high adaptability. The interior is built like a hive and it has a crew of tens of thousands of drones.
Even though it is the most common vessel, it is the largest in the Borg fleet. Its mass is 2.5 million metric tons.
Cybernetic arm
At the time of assimilation, the drone is fitted with a cybernetic arm. Sometimes the organic arm is amputated but
not always. The arm can be equipped with different features according to the function the drone will have.
Cranial transceiver log
An implant that contains data about where the drone has been stationed.
Data node
It contains a drone manifest that holds tactical information, sensor telemetry, assimilation logistics and vessel
movements for a radie of thirty light-years.
Designation
The Borg use two kinds of designations:
Designations of drones
Every drone in the collective is assigned a position and a designation that reflects that position, for example
two of five, which means that the drone is the second drone of a work group of five drones. The position could be:
primary adjunct of Unimatrix Zero One. That position reveals the drones work task and where it is stationed.
Species designations
Every time the Borg encounters a new species, they catalogue it and give it a number, for example species
180 - the Ferengi. By this number, you can tell how early the Borg found or assimilated a species.
Distribution Node
A device that are mounted inside Borg vessels and are used to connect the drones to the hive mind.
They are placed throughout the ship since they have a short range. The Vinculum has the same function but
on a much larger scale.
Drone
A drone is part organic and part cybernetic. It has been improved with many bio implants that enhances its abilities.
A drone is a slave under the Hive mind, which is governed by the Borg Queen. It has no awareness of its own
individuality, only the collective.
Exo Plating
A metal armour covering most of the drone's body, from the scull to the feet.
Forced plasma beam
This is the ray that is created by handheld Borg weapons.
Hive Mind
A huge collective mind that is described as thousands of voices. Drones are continually connected to the
Hive and can hear the thoughts of all other drones. This is a very effective way of communicating and allows
the collective to cooperate and makes it possible for the entire collective to be perfectly coordinated. The Queen
can coordinate and give orders to any drone in the collective instantaneously. She can also receive information from
any drone.
Hugh
Hugh was a drone found with vague life signs outside a crashed Borg scout ship. He was taken care of by the crew of
Enterprise. First they wanted to use him to spread a virus to the whole collective but when he regained his
individuality they changed their minds and granted him asylum. De declined because he knew that the Borg would
search for him and perhaps assimilate Enterprise when they found him. One of the reasons for his decline was that
he and LaForge had become good friends, and he did not want LaForge to get hurt.
Implants
After a victim of assimilation has been injected with nanoprobes, cybernetic implants are surgically attached
to its body. These implants becomes an integrated part of the body and is not rejected by the immune system of
most species since the nanoprobes has taken over the blood cells and rewritten their DNA. The result is a drone
that is half cybernetic and half organic.
Locutus of Borg
Captain Picard of the Enterprise before the battle at Wolf 359, kidnapped by the Borg and assimilated. He was named
Locutus of Borg by the collective. His individuality was intact because the Queen wanted him as a spokesperson for
the Borg. His assimilation also gave the Borg access to all his knowledge including tactical data. With this
knowledge the Borg were able to penetrate the Federation defences swiftly. Locutus were rescued by his crew on
the enterprise and was able to stop the cube before reaching its final destination - earth. All implants were
removed and Locutus of Borg once again became Captain Picard. Now Picard had learned much about Borg tactics
and was thus a great help in the second Borg attack on earth.
Maternity chamber
A chamber used to speed up the growth of infants and children that are not old enough to be assimilated.
The chamber is filled with fluid and the child is placed in it for several months. After several months
in the chamber, the child has grown into an adult who is ready for assimilation.
Nanoprobes
Sub microscopic robots that is used in the first step of assimilation. They are about the same size as a
blood cell and is self replicating. They attack the blood cells and take over their functions and rewrite
the victims DNA, this is done in a few seconds after the insertion into the blood of a victim. They are then
able to carry Borg technology throughout the entire body.
Neuro Processing adjunct
An implant that increases the synaptic effectiveness of a drone. It is placed behind an ear.
Neuro Processor
An implant that is like a memory chip. It stores all the instructions the drone has received from the Hive mind.
It is placed right below the rib cage.
Neuro Transceiver
An implant that keep the drone connected to the Hive mind. It is placed in the upper spinal column.
It sends and receives signals from the vinculum and the distribution node. Because of this implant
the entire collective can absorb the knowledge the drone posesses.
North West Passage
An area in the Delta Quadrant, where the Borg had lost territory to species 8472. There were a fierce war
between the two races and the Borg were loosing rapidly. The area was thus free from Borg activity. The crew of
Voyager was planning to take this passage through Borg space but changed their minds when they detected species
8472 that they thought was a much worse foe than the Borg did.
Ocular implant
When a drone is assimilated, one eye is removed and replaced with a prosthetic eye. It gives the drone very
complex visual information. In other words, the drone's eyesight is very much improved.
It functions like some kind of holographic imaging system.
Proximity transceiver
An implant that sends a signal to the collective. It is useful if a drone has lost its way and perhaps lost its
uplink to the Hive mind. If it is removed or is malfunctioning, it can grow out a new proximity transceiver.
Probe
A sphere shaped vessel built in the same manner as the cube, but much smaller. It can be docked inside the
cube and be released through a central hatch. It is often used in reconnaissance missions. It cannot withstand
the same firepower as the Borg Cube and is thus easier to destroy.
Queen
The leader of the Borg. She is like an insect queen and controls every drone in the collective. She can read
all the drones thoughts through the Hive mind. Unlike the drones, she is aware of her individuality but is at
the same time one of the collective. She lives in the Unimatrix One but can leave it at any time if she wishes
to aid in a special assimilation for example.
Queen vessel
A diamond shaped vessel, specially designed for the Borg Queen. It is very small compared to the Cube and in
the Borg fleet, only the scout ship is smaller. Inside it is sphere shaped. It is often docked in Unimatrix
One (the Queens home) but sometimes it leaves when the Queen wishes to witness a special assimilation. From this
vessel, the Queen can control the entire collective. This makes the vessel very important to the Borg collective.
Root command structure
The Hive mind is built on a vast amount of subcommands. A subcommand is a transmission of an order of some kind
that tells one or many drones to act in a certain way. These subcommands are orginised in two levels of structures:
Root command structure
The Root command structure controlls several subcommands necessary to carry out all functions in the collective.
Examples of such subcommands are: defence, communications and navigation. The subcommands on this level are called
root commands. The Root command structure is the highest system for subcommands. You can say that the root command
structure is a computer program which function is to control the entire Borg collective.
Command structure
Below the root command structure there are a command structure with subcommands of varible importance. An example
of such a subcommand is the regeneration subcommand which tells the drones when they should regenerate. The
subcommands on this level are called commands. The command structure is the lowest known system for subcommands.
Servo armature
This is one of the medical repair drones instruments. In this single instrument, there are a laser scalpel,
micro sutar and a bio scanner. This instrument can be found on the medical drones arm.
Sphere
A vessel much smaller than the Cube but still large. It can be docked inside a Cube and can be deployed through
a central hatch. It has as much firepower as an intrepid class star ship, which is much less than a Cube, and
since it is smaller, it is easier to destroy.
Scout vessel
The smallest known Borg vessel. It has a crew of only five drones. Only two vessels have been detected by the
Federation.
Sub vocal processor
An implant that enhances the voice. Once implanted the traditional Borg voice occurs.
Tactical Cube
A heavily armed Borg Cube with a hull enforced by large metal plates.
Tubules
Tubules are thin tube like sonds that are used to insert nanoprobes into the blood stream of a subject for
assimilation. They can penetrate any by the federation known alloy. Each drone has tubules attached on one
hand or on some fingers. They are shot or pushed out rapidly.
Transwarp conduit
A subspace tunnel that the Borg uses as means of transportation. Inside a transwarp conduit a vessel can double
its speed to at least twenty or more times its maximum velocity. A conduit is opened by a high-energy tachyon pulse.
The conduits are are keyed to respond to a specific frequency. A transwarp conduit is a part of a transwarp network,
which is a central junction of many conduits. In our galaxy there are six networks controlled by the Borg.
Unimatrix One
An enormous compound in the middle of Borg space. This is where the Queen lives.
Unimatrix Zero
A "dream" world that some very few drones came to when they regenerated. It was a place where the drones could
live lives like individuals, in peace - until they awakened. When they awoke, they had no memory of the place even
though they went there every time they regenerated. This world was destroyed by Voyager and the drones in it started
a brief civil war against the collective.
Vinculum
An advanced processing device that is placed in every Borg vessel. Its function is to interconnect the minds of
drones so that they can hear each other's thoughts.
