The Borg drone is part organic and part synthetic. There are approximately fifty trillion drones in the collective. Every drone has been abducted by the Borg. The Borg attacks other species and takes prisoners. These prisoners are taken to assimilation chambers where they are fitted with cybernetic implants that enhances their physical abilities. These implants are surgically implanted inside and outside the body, and some implants even grow on their own. They are also injected with small robots, called nanoprobes in their blood stream.

A few of the implants that each drone is fitted with are: the Neuro Processor, just below the rib cage. It stores all of the information and instructions received from the collective. One eye is fitted with a Ocular implant that enhances the eyesight. One of the victims forearms is mounted with a cybernetic replacement, sometimes the organic arm is amputated but not always. A very important implant is the Neuro transceiver that is placed in the upper spinal column. This implant creates the link to the Hive mind which gives the collective full access to all the victims’ knowledge which means that the whole collective takes one more step toward perfection every time an individual is assimilated. On the picture below, you can see were on the drones these implants are implanted.

After the assimilation is complete, the drone has considerable strength and it can function in highly hostile environments such as in space. The drones do not eat to absorb the nutrition needed for survival, instead they run on energy. This energy drives their technological systems that produce the needed nutrients. The implants are able to synthesize any molecule that their biologic tissues need. The drones have no need for sleep; instead they stand in an alcove and are regenerated in an inactive mode. Drones can function up to three hundred hours without regeneration. But normally they regenerate as much as humanoid sleeps.

The drone is part of a large collective and is not aware of its own individuality. It can be compared to an insect drone that is continually working to achieve the objectives of the collective. The drone is always connected to the Hive Mind that allows it to hear the thoughts of the entire collective. This has been described as "thousands of voices". It is a very effective way of communication and it helps the Borg to be united into one force. It is very effective in battle. The Borg Queen uses the Hive Mind to control the collective, through it she communicates orders to the approximately fifty trillions of drones that is under her immediate power.

If a drone is damaged or dysfunctional, it can be healed, if the drones in the collective consciousness focus on healing it. A drone can also be reactivated up to 73 hours after its death, if the neural pathways are intact. This is done by using nanoprobes to reverse cellular necrosis. To achieve this the Borg stimulates the cerebral cortex with a neuro electric isopulse. The nanoprobes compensates for any cellular degradation. After the stimulation of the cerebral cortex it only takes about a minute until the drone is fully functional again. If a drone is damaged beyond repair, it is discarded. This is done by removing the Neuro transceiver. Its memories continues to exist in the collective consciousness. In this way the Borg are immortal. When a drone dies its experience and knowledge continue to exist within the collective forever. This reviving technology was assimilated from species 149.
