Benjamin Sisco is the new commander of a space station stationed in Bajoran space after that the Bajorans have driven out the Cardassian oppressors. Sisco dwells much in the past, in a time when his beloved wife died in the battle of Wolf 359. Sisco was the captain of one of the ships that tried to fend off the Borg cube which was led by Locutus. The cube locked onto his ship and in spite of all the crews effort the ships shields did not hold and the ship was torn apart and exploded. Sisco and his crew had to use the escape pods to survive. Sisco was not able to save his wife who was onboard, but his son Jake survived.

Both Sisco and his son are reluctant to move into the station. Once there Sisco meets his first officer, Kiera, who is a Bajoran with a temper. After that meeting and after capturing the Ferengi Quarkīs nephew, stealing, he makes a bargain with Quark that he will be a community leader, keep his bar/casino open and stay in spite of his intentions to leave.

Next task is to meet with the Bajoran spirutal leader, where Sisco gets the suggestion to find eight lost orbīs which is a powerful spiritual relic with great worth to the Bajorans.

Sisco and his good friend Dax goes searching for the orbīs and finds a non-natural wormhole that takes them all the way to the Gamma quadrant. It is the first known stabile wormhole. On the way back they are captured by the beings that created the wormhole and Sisco has to explain to them how the humans linear existance works and they goes through large parts of his life to understand. The part of his life that makes them understand that he is not hostile is the horrible experience of loosing his wife. The Beings accepts Sisco and allows their wormhole to be open to any ship who wishes to pass through.

During his absence the crew of the station has decided to move the station to claim the new found wormhole. Also a Cardassian war ship has passed through the wormhole and not returned. Several Cardassian ships starts a war with the space station thinking they somehow have destroyed she missing ship. In spite of skillful bluffs from Kiera, Sisco returns not a second too early towing a stranded Cardassian ship out of the wormhole which causes them to withdraw since they understand that the missing ship has not been destroyed by the station.

After his experince with the alien beings Sisco feels motivated to stay on the space station has no second thoughts any more.

This is the first episode in Deep Space Nine, so many characters need to be introduced and much information must be delivered. The episode is not so interesting, it feels dull and long. This is accepable since it is the first episode and it is a must see if you wish to understand the story behind the series.
