The time has come! After a long time in the Delta Quadrant, the star ship U.S.S Voyager reaches Borg territory. They detect a way right through Borg space which they nick name the North West passage. Soon Voyager detects an even worse opponent filling the passage. They are in the middle of a fierce war between The Borg and a species designated 8472 which the Borg seem to loose. Kes receives telepathic threats like "the week will perish" and Janeway decides to do the impossible - an alliance with the Borg. The Borg are unable to assimilate species 8472 because their immune system destroys anything that penetrates their skin. The Doctor is treating Ensign Kim for wounds received by the species and finds a way to attack them at a cellular level. With this knowledge she starts puts the alliance into effect. The Borg chooses a representative - Seven of Nine to communicate for the Borg and to work with Janeway and Tuvok in the development of weapons with the Doctors countermeasure. Janeway must keep it from the Borg until the Borg live up to their end of the bargain and give Voyager safe passage through their space. However, the time is short, Janeway is hurt and Chakotay who disagrees with Janeways alliance takes command and must decide whether to maintain the alliance or to break it.

This is one of my favourite episodes in all Star Trek. The first part builds up an intense story, which includes the introduction of the new and complex character - Seven of Nine. This is very well done. Part two lives up to the expectations created in the first part.

Season 4
Episode 2
Director Anson Williams
Written By Joe Menosky

Voyager is still inside Borg territory and the Drone Seven of Nine is on board the ship. Her human physiology and immune system are activated since the neural transceiver is removed. The Doctor starts to take off implants that her immune system is rejecting and soon find himself at a difficult decision - to save her by removing most implants or to follow her wish to remain Borg and consequently let her die. Janeway decides to save the drone because she deems Seven of Nine's judgement to be highly influenced by the Borg. At the same time, Kes is showing vast improvements in her mental abilities and becomes more dangerous to herself and to Voyager by the hour.

Seven has trouble adapting to a life severed from the collective and tries to contact the Borg but fails when Kes stops her by using her new found abilities. Seven is confined to the brig and feels like a captive on Voyager. The Doctor finishes his work with restoring Seven to a human being and she finds the work acceptable and promises not to try contacting the collective again. Kes is realizing that she is transforming and that she cannot stay on Voyager so she chooses to leave and start exploring the sub atomic level and beyond. She leaves and gives her friends one last gift - a huge speed acceleration that takes Voyager out of Borg space and ten years closer to home.

For the second time the Federation star ship Voyager encounters the Borg. A Borg Probe is attacking Voyager but Janeway beams a photon torpedo into the Probe, which explodes from the inside and leaves only debris and some undamaged technology. They scan the vicinity and find a damaged Sphere not far away. Voyager sees an opportunity to steal a trans warp hub, which could take Voyager a few years closer to home. The preparation starts with holo deck simulations. Seven is ordered to go through her parent's research results and to find an advantage against the Borg. She learns more about her childhood. The Borg Queen is well aware of Voyagers plans and contacts Seven with an ultimatum - rejoin the collective or Voyager will be assimilated. Seven is disturbed by this and when she finds out that Janeway wants her out of the away team she pleads and is allowed to follow through the mission to beam into the Sphere and steal the trans warp hub. However, in the Sphere the queen communicates to Seven whom then stays when the rest of the team has to beam back to the ship. The Sphere travels to Unimatrix One to the Borg Queen where Seven learns that the Queen had stationed her on Voyager to gain an understanding of humans and then be able to make the assimilation of earth possible. It is to be done by a bio charge infected with nanoprobes planned to be programmed by Seven. Seven is forced to view the assimilation of species 10 026 but instead of aiding it she helps four individuals to escape. Janeway is not giving up easily, she takes a shuttlecraft with Tuvok, Paris and the Doctor and is able to trace the Sphere to the Unimatrix one. There she has to confront The Borg Queen to be able to rescue Seven of Nine. Janeway saves Seven and both are beamed out of Unimatrix One. Once out the Borg Queens vessel follows them into a trans warp conduit. The shuttle ahead of its pursuer and Voyager waits at the end of the conduit and fires photon torpedoes to close the conduit, and after a while, the Borg Queens vessel comes out - in pieces. It is not known if the Borg Queen was on the ship when it exploded. She, or an identical successor appeared at a later encounter with Voyager.

This is another good episode. It is interesting and exciting but the end feels like it's a little pressed for time and lacks some real tension. Nevertheless, its well worth the time spent watching.

Part II Season 7
Episode 1
Director Mike Vejar
Written by Mike Sussman, Brannon Braga & Joe Menosky

The Queen realizes that something is wrong in the collective. She detects drones that are dreaming when they regenerate. She immediately starts to dismantle all drones she detects to dream. There are only a few, but for every drone she dismantles, a few more are revealed.

This dream world is called Unimatrix Zero, a place that do not exist in reality but feels very real for the drones that ends up there when they regenerate. It is caused by a mutation that are found in one on a million and for those drones it serves as a sanctuary, a place where they can live normal lives as individuals but only while regenerating and they have no memory of the place when they are awake. Together they are at least ten thousand. Seven is informed that she, herself used to go to Unimatrix Zero when she was Borg.

Afraid of loosing their sanctuary they send for Seven of Nine and plead for help. Voyager views it as a distress call and realizes the opportunity to hurt the collective. They launch a rescue mission. The Doctor develops a nano virus that will take out the drones cortical inhibitor. This will cause all the drones in Unimatrix Zero to remember their "dream" and to be liberated from the Hive mind. During several visits in Unimatrix Zero Seven, begin to love a person that she had a relationship with as a drone.

Voyager detects a tactical cube and decides to spread the virus through the Central plexus of the cube, which would cause it to spread instantly through the entire collective. They beam an away team consisting of Janeway, Tuvoc and B'lanna, onboard the cube, who let the Borg assimilate them, using a neuro suppressor to retain their individuality even though they are almost fully assimilated. They infiltrate the central plexus, spread the virus and liberate tens of thousands of drones. However, Tuvoc experiences problems, is overcome by the Hive mind, and starts to obey the Queen. He causes Janeway to be captured who is then placed in a device that transmits to the Queen. After bargaining, Janeway accepts a compromise, to tell Voyager to convince the rogue drones to rejoin the collective and live, or die due to a modification to Voyagers nano virus programmed to kill every rogue drone. However, in her message she hints to Chakotay to close down Unimatrix Zero.

Voyager closes it down and all drones leave Unimatrix Zero. Seven says goodbye to her friend. After he and all drones have left, a civil war begins, some Borg vessels are under full control of the resistance. One sphere aids Voyager in attacking the tactical cube in an attempt to retain their away team. The Queen cause the cube to self-destruct but the away team is beamed back to Voyager seconds before the explosion.

This episode is a little slow at the start, it lacks some real tension, especially in part I. Part II is better but not very exciting. It is a good story, it has potential, and it does not live up to the expectations. It is acceptable but could be much more than that.

Voyager is Home! However, the 33 years in the Delta quadrant had several unpleasant consequences. Seven of Nine and Chakotay died and Tuvoc did not get home in time to cure a mental decease. Janeway has decided to change the past. She has prepared for a rescue mission for some time. She buys technology to travel back in time to help Voyager come home ten years earlier. She travels through a time rift and embark on Voyager.

The Borg Queen is aware of Admiral Janeways presence on Voyager and she visits Seven while regenerating to find answers and warns Voyager to go into the nebula. Voyager is upgraded with technology from the future and is ready to take on the Borg and go home. When Voyager goes into the nebula a conflict arises between the two Janeways because the Captain wants to destroy the transwarp network. The so far rule breaking and non idealistic Admiral Janeway becomes more and more like the way she used to be 33 years before and tells the Captain of another way to get home that presents more risk but they decides to put this new plan into action.

Admiral Janeway takes her shuttle into the nebula and contacts the Queen with a synaptic interface that allows her to appear to be with the Queen in personal but her real self is safe in the shuttlecraft. She lures the Queen into a trap by suggesting that she and the Captain do not agree and that she wants to help the Borg if the Borg agrees to take Voyager home. As they speak, the Borg detects the shuttle and believes to have an advantage. Voyager enters the nebula and goes into the network while the Queen inserts nanoprobes into the Admiral and is infected by a neurolythic pathogen that kills the Queen and causes the entire network to explode. The Queen managed to send a sphere after Voyager before dying to kill every one on Voyager so that the Admiral never would have existed but the sphere fails and is destroyed. Voyager arrives to their home but the Borg has been struck with a devastating blow that might have wiped out the entire race. How much damage the Borg suffered is not known, however, the Borg has shown resilient and persistent before and might as well have survived.

This is a good episode and well worth watching. In this episode, the authors are trying to tie up the loose ends and that takes time so it happens a lot in this double episode. I think that they manage fairly well to do this and it is a good ending for the series.
