During the thousands of years the Borg have existed, they have assimilated thousands of species. Most species have been assimilated fast but other have resisted longer. Few species have defeated the Borg. The two species that have resisted most are species 8472 and species 5618 - Humans. These two species has defeated the Borg a number of times. The Collective might not dare to assimilate species 8472 but they have not given up on humankind.

The Borg´s first encounter with species 8472 was in 2373. They found this species very interesting since it was the most powerful species that the Borg had ever encountered. If they could assimilate it, they would take a large leap towards perfection. The species lived in fluidic space and were not aware of the dimension that we know as universe.

They had a very efficient defence consisting of organic ships and biogenically engineered weapons technology. With this technology, they could easily defeat the Borg Collective in every encounter. The Bio ships can, if linked together, create a weapon that destroys an entire world in a few seconds. With this enormous firepower the Borg Collective were close to defeat and probable extinction. The most effective defence that species 8472 had was on the cellular level. Their immune system destroyed almost everything that penetrated their skin including nanoprobes. The Borg strategy, to assimilate a few individuals to learn of their defences and weaknesses did not work. What the Borg cannot assimilate - they cannot understand. They cannot investigate as many other species do and thus without the ability to assimilate, they are weak. Since species 8472 use organic ships and technology, all their ships were defended with the same immune system as an individual and could therefore not be harmed by nanoprobes either.

Fortunate for the Borg, they were able to negotiate an alliance with the Federation star ship Voyager and with their research, they could construct a weapon with nanoprobes that the Doctor onboard Voyager programmed so they could not be detected by the immune system of species 8472. They were then able to destroy several Bio ships which made the species 8472 realize that they were not invulnerable and then consequently backed down and the conflict ended.

The Borg have encountered humans many times but only tried to assimilate their home world twice. This species has inferior weapons to the Collective but they have overcome assaulting Borg vessels many times.

The first assault against their home world Earth was almost successful. The Borg kidnapped Captain Jean Luc Picard, assimilated him, and maintained his individuality. Picard or Locutus of Borg as his new name was, led the assault on Earth. Picards first officer Riker had the command of the Enterprise and followed the cube that were on its way to Earth, but the Cube was faster. The Federation gathered every ship they had in range of Wolf 359. Based on my calculations they managed to gather 39 ships but they were all destroyed. The Enterprise caught up with the cube close to Earth and rescued Picard who with some regained awareness succeeded to give the entire crew of the cube the command - "Sleep" which caused the cube to self destruct.

The other great assault on Earth was not as successful since Picard had learned many tactics from the Borg and he could lead the Federation to a great victory. The Federation counter attack, led by captain Picard, destroyed the attacking cube in a short battle. Before it exploded, a sphere was launched. Abord the vessel was the Queen and a number of drones. They created a time vortex and travelled back to the time when earth made its first contact with an alien race. A very important time for Earth. Without that event, earth would not create weapons and attain knowledge of how to defend themselves against a Borg attack. Picard followed into the vortex and destroyed the sphere as it was firing at the small space craft that would be the first earthly vessel to travel in warp and the reason for first contact with the Vulcans. Before the sphere was destroyed the Queen and some drones beamed into the Enterprise-E and started to take over it. This attempt failed and the Queen died. Picard and his crew repaired the space ship and made the warp travel possible and first contact took place.

However, the Borg did not stop at that. The humans were important enough to plant a drone on the Federation star ship Voyager, and letting it regain its humanity and without knowing it, study the human race thoroughly. The drone's designation was Seven of Nine and came to love the human race so much that she refused to aid in developing a weapon that were meant to explode in Earths atmosphere and slowly during some twenty years infect mankind and slowly turn them all into drones.

Voyager some years later managed to kill the Borg Queen and destroy one of five transwarp networks used by the Borg. It was one of the largest setbacks in Borg history and it is still not known how much damage the Collective took from this assault. It might even have wiped out the entire Borg race.
