The Borg is a powerful united force that has defeated thousands of species
and assimilated their civilizations. The Borg
is feared in the whole galaxy, known for their effective and merciless warfare. As the highest goal the
Borg
have is to be perfect, they are always watchful for alien vessels that they
can assimilate. They also assimilate
complete worlds. Why then is the Borg collective such an effective war machine?
There are several reasons for their success. Some of the reasons are accounted for on this page:
The Borg means of coordination is the Hive Mind. This allows the collective to
be in constant communication within itself. All drones always hear the other drones in the collective and in this
way they work together to accomplish tasks. The Queen has her own ship from which she can coordinate the entire collective.
She has a screen where she can see for example how a specific battle is going. She uses the Hive mind to give orders
if it is needed. She has complete power over the collective and can use it in any way she desires. The drones will always
obey unless some technology is malfunctioning.
Assimilation is a very efficient way of learning of about opponents defences. When the Borg assimilate an individual
that person’s knowledge of defence systems, anatomy etc is immediately available to the collective. Since most space travelling
individuals are well acquainted with their own species weapons and tactics, this knowledge is not difficult to attain.
In this way, the Borg knows exactly how and where to attack.
The Borg has a very large and efficient fleet. It is very fast and well armed. One of the most useful
features in Borg fleet is that they can adapt their weapons, shields and defences
in a few seconds. In this way their opponent’s weapons and strategies are easily overcome. A skilled crew can
do the same thing to the Borg though, but manually, by rotating shield frequencies, weapons modifications etc.
Common weapons that theBorguse are the tractor beam. It is very powerful and are
used to lock on to a ship and pull it into the Borg vessel, where they can capture
the crew and assimilate them and their ships technology. The tractor beam is
so strong that the shields of a star ship cannot hold for more than a few minutes. The Borg also uses a laser
beam that can cut out a section from a star ship and than pull the section into the cube. The Borg also use
torpedoes and phasers.
The Borg consists of approximately 50 trillion drones. There are different types of drones,
the Tactical drones are used for battle. All drones are equipped with exo plating which is a kind of armour. They also have
a shield, which protects them from weapons fire. This shield has similar traits to vessels shields. It is very effective
since it adapts. Opponents only have one or two chances to fire at drones, after that, all drones' shields have adapted
to that weapon. It is possible to program weapons differently so that every weapon can fire about two shots each. If they
have the same programming, none of them penetrates the shield after it has adapted. Except for excellent protection,
the drones have handheld weapons. In close combat they can use their inhuman strength to hit their opponents or
neutralize them by inserting their tubules and injecting nanoprobes. Both are effective but the nanoprobes
makes the opponents passive and easy to capture.
The Borg are very decisive about keeping their drones
alive. They are also searching for drones that have been left behind. But they can sacrifice many drones
if it serves their purposes. Even though many drones can be sacrificed, the collective
grows because many more are assimilated than are killed.
In spite of the Borg's effectiveness, their strategies and technology have weaknesses.
The only way the Borg learn about another species defence strategies is through
assimilation. This is sometimes a weakness because if the Borg
encounters a species that they are not able to assimilate they have no strategic
advantages and are very vulnerable for attacks. The Borg have no ability to investigate
and draw conclusions from a material, thus scientific research is beyond their abilities.
This is a major setback which proved to be fatal when the Borg encountered species 8472
that had an immune system that rejected the nanoprobes used in assimilation.
The Borg were unable to defeat the species and were swiftly overrun in every battle.
The Borg, pressured and on the brink of defeat, made an agreement with the
crew of U.S.S Voyager who could do research and find a way to penetrate species 8472's defences.
The Borg collective survived the war thanks to Voyager.
